Most of you will already know what PPF is (paint protection film). Some of you may have already experienced the benefits on current or previous vehicles.
Its’ sole purpose is to protect the surface of the paint where it is applied. It’s a polyurethane-based substance, which has an invisible appearance. Most brands will be hydrophobic (water runs off) and instantly heal if the top layer is scratched.
So, is it a good idea to install PPF on new cars? Absolutely. In fact, this is the best time to apply PPF. It helps maintain the condition of the new bodywork against chemicals, light scratches, bird droppings and everyday road use. If you typically swap your vehicle every few years, and want to have the best trade-in value, a PPF installation on the front end is a great, cost-effective option. Just a few small paint scratches or stone chips can be the difference between “Fair” or “Good” appraisal grade category. This means you could lose between 30-65% value of the vehicle for paintwork in those first 3 years.

Can PPF be installed on used cars? Again, absolutely. The used car market is unsteady. So investing in a rejuvenating treatment of your existing vehicle, with PPF as the final protection, is the best way to ensure that the value of your used car lives on.
Costs A typical PPF package is what we would call a front end, or extended front end. It will set you back around £1,600 plus VAT. This covers all the high impact zones; bumper, bonnet, wings, headlights and mirrors.
Managing the maintenance of your vehicle is still necessary with PPF. If you don’t have the time to look after the washing yourself, then consideration is needed when taking it to a valeting or wash service.
We have had customers return to us after a drive through wash service has excessively blasted the edges of the PPF. Not all edges are wrapped, and with this, the edges can be lifted allowing water and air to get in.
In these cases, we will do our best to refit or replace any damaged sections. We work with the client on best practice for washing. We also offer downloadable guides to help you achieve a clean car in very little time. https://surreydetailing.co.uk/2024/03/05/vehicle-maintenance-guide/
In essence, PPF is protection not perfection. But with a small amount of knowledge and attention, it will last the lifetime of your ownership and still look as good as the day it was applied.
